Training defensive situations- Atletico de Madrid (pre-season)

10/29/2017

In this video there are a number of defensive scenarios that are being practiced:

  • - 1v1's going across the edge of the penalty area, with the objective of denying a shot on goal.
  • - 1v2, defending outnumbered. Again, the objective is to prevent a shot on goal.
  • - 2v4 interception practice, as a defensive pairing the objective is to slide and screen passes before looking to intercept.
  • - Defending from wide areas; creating specific situations where the ball has been played in behind the Full Back, before looking to defend an in-swung cross.
  • - Unopposed defensive shape practice looking to work on players' positioning in relation to the 'ball'.

Points to consider:

- Atletico are a Full-Time team of players who train almost daily. As good as these practices' are, exactly how ideal are they for your team? You must consider how much contact time, weekly, you get with your players- and what do they need in their development?

Certainly, these are potentially great practices to adapt to the needs of your players, but long lines and highly tactical practices are best avoided if you have both limited space, resources and coaching time with your players!
